Northwestern University’s $850 million Ryan Field project, set to debut in 2026, is poised to deliver a premium experience unlike any other in college football. From cutting-edge seating innovations to exclusive hospitality spaces, the new stadium signals a strategic shift toward high-end amenities designed to enhance fan engagement and elevate revenue potential.

Luxury/Quality over Quantity

With a reduced capacity of 35,000 seats—down from 47,000—the new Ryan Field will focus on creating an intimate and upscale atmosphere. Fans can expect 23-inch-wide, padded seats complete with backrests and increased legroom, offering maximum comfort. Adding to the premium appeal, a canopy will cover the seating bowl, protecting fans from unpredictable weather while improving acoustics for an immersive experience.

💬
“So the question is: How do you invest in something that’s not just putting more people in the rafters? You get rid of the worst seats, but create better experiences for everyone who is there. That’s the trend I think we’re going to see.” -- Patrick Ryan Jr.

Premium Hospitality Spaces

The stadium will feature four distinct premium clubs, each tailored to different audiences, from dedicated Wildcat supporters to corporate guests. These exclusive spaces will provide high-end dining options, private lounges, and exceptional sightlines, catering to the growing demand for experiential offerings in college sports. Open concourses will keep fans connected to the game while exploring elevated hospitality areas. In the new venue, about 10% of the venue will be in higher-priced premium areas, and those fans will cover 40-50% of the revenue each game.

New Benchmarks for Accessibility

Designed to exceed ADA compliance by nearly 200%, Ryan Field will set a new benchmark for accessibility in sports venues. Enhanced access points and inclusive seating options ensure that every fan, regardless of ability, can fully enjoy the game-day experience.

Year-Round Usability

Beyond football games, the stadium is designed as a community hub, hosting events such as concerts, student movie nights, and winter festivals. With over 200,000 square feet of parks and plazas, the venue will feature vibrant spaces for tailgating, live entertainment, and pop-up dining, creating value for both the university and the Evanston community.

Economic and Environmental Commitments

Ryan Field’s development is expected to generate $1.3 billion in economic activity, including $659 million for the local Evanston area. The project also includes $208 million in contracts for minority- and women-owned businesses, underscoring Northwestern’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Sustainability is another priority, with the stadium designed to achieve Gold LEED certification, aligning with modern environmental standards.
